UW Struggle: Today in Optics!

Descartes_opticsScene: A warm day in the Midwest. Not hot. No frozen tundra.

Zoom: Somehow, heat waves rise from the pavement and distort your vision. What’s happening?

Title: Behold, our optics!

Here are merely three announcements (there were more!), all today, from the world that is my campus and professional life. One of these things is not like the other, but kind of, and well, you know.

First: On the search for a head basketball coach, which began with alacrity:

“We are committed to a men’s basketball program that competes for championships, succeeds in the classroom and represents our University and community in a positive light, on and off the court,” Gillespie said. “Green Bay basketball has a strong tradition and our next coach will build upon that tradition and take our program to the next level.”

Second: On getting rid of old people the ‘Voluntary Separation Program’:

“Later this week, approximately 154 eligible current employees in all classifications will be notified of an opportunity to voluntarily separate from the university. Eligible employees include all those at least 55 years of age having 5 or more years of service.”

And finally…

Third: An exciting opportunity!:

Faculty asked to deliver ‘last lecture’ as part of 50th Celebration

What wisdom would you share in a lecture if you knew it was your last opportunity?  As part of the 50th anniversary of UW-Green Bay, a series of “last lectures” will be delivered during the 2015-2016 anniversary year.

Um… Okay then. Will I be standing on plastic when I begin the lecture?

Well, if I still have a job next year, I’m pretty sure this is the video Christmas card I will receive from UW administration (Fade out as kids gather around me to hear seasons greetings…)
